Russianize Color and Inspiration

Pretty excited to start this because I forgot about those little russian dolls that fit inside each other. How fun, I want some!

RUSSIANIZE

My second word is Russianize.

Russianize- (v.) To make Russian.

This could be pretty cool because I have some Russian heritage....maybe i'll re-discover my roots. I'm thinking this will be mostly inspired from russian architecture and traditional costume. Color wise, it's pretty obvious because Russians tend to use bright saturated colors with the stark contrast of white.

First Project: Gamp Prints

Alright, so I literally just finished sketching...I got an early start this week then didn't do much until this morning. It's really hard getting back into school mode. I can foresee this project being pushed to the back burner later in the quarter, but I'm gonna try and not let that happen.

So, my first set of prints are all based on the word gamp, aka umbrellas. In my opinion they turned out a little child like, which is ok i guess because I never really specified what age I would be working into. I guess on for my second project I will choose a category (men, women, children, home) and an age range if necessary. I decided to choose tonals for each print because my original idea was for most of the prints to be sketchy like the dickens sketch I posted earlier this week. That's not really my style, so i pushed it as much as I could in 6 days. Overall, I'm satisfied, not extremely excited for all of them, but hey, I had fun.

Color and Inspiration

I decided to base my color palette off this beautiful picture of japanese umbrellas. The muted colors will work perfectly with the tans used from parchment.

Gamp

Ok so apparently gamp is a british term for an umbrella, refering to Mrs. Gamp, a nurse in a Dickens novel. I'm thinking i'm gonna take a watery and sketchy approach to this word, so things like wet parchment and neutrals will be my main focus.

And my first word is.....

STARBURST.....ha just kidding, that was for Shane

My real first word....GAMP-(n.) A large umbrella, in Dicken's Martin Chuzzlewit.
I have no idea what this is about, but hopefully tonight after class i'll do some research and post more about it.

GAMP.GAMP.GAMP.GAMP.GAMP

Color?

I was just thinking about my color palettes for each week....should I choose new colors each time or choose one palette for every month?... I' thinking I need to choose a color pallete focused on each separate word because each one will evoke a different emotion, state or physicality it's not like the words will be related....hmm that's a thought, chooseing one word and then chooseing 3 other synonyms of that word for the rest of the month so I get a complete collection instead of just 5 random prints every week. No nevermind I need to stick with my original thought process, this is an exercise I want to do to improve my skills and keep myself focused. Ok, It's decided then. Even if it's more work for me, I'm gonna choose a new color palette each week based on the random word I choose and design around that word.

Ok I'm gonna extend my rules as well...

Monday: Choose a random word from the dictionary and Decide on Color Palette
Tuesday: Find Inspirational Pictures
Wednesday-Saturday: Draw like crazy
Sunday: Post my final work!

First Post: Project Statement

So I only have 3 more days left at my internship in Dallas, and I really don't have much to do anymore, so I figured I'd start a blog. I really want to expand my portfolio to show my love for print design, but unfortunately the unfocused creative side of me comes out whenever I try and do projects on my own. I figured that making it all public would force me to keep up with my work....so here's the deal....

Step One....steal my mom's really old beautifully bound leather dictionary.

Step Two....Every Monday I will open the dictionary to a random page and choose a random word. This word will be my focus for the week.

Step Three....Design 5 prints that associate with that word.

Step Four....Post inspiration and process pieces I work on throughout the week.

Step Five....Post my final 5 prints by Sunday.

My project will start on my first day of my last summer quarter of school June 21st.

(So you can only choose from like 6 fonts when using this blog, futura isn't one of them sadly, but Webdings is...i was really temped to choose webdings and see if anyone would copy and paste it to see what I was really typing.) Did you do it?
